Centuries ago, on the land we now know as the district of Kale in Denizli, stood a city called Tabae. Its roots reached back to the Iron Age. Its civic institutions took shape during the Hellenistic period; it resisted Rome by force in 189 BC, later sided with Rome during the Mithridatic Wars, preserved its own mint and civic institutions under Roman rule, and became an episcopal centre in Late Antiquity.
